How a Muskoka resort found $550K a year in energy savings hiding in plain sight.

221 rooms. Two buildings. Pools, spas, ballrooms, restaurants — running year-round. Nobody had ever looked at the whole picture at once.

About

Industry: Hospitality & Resort
Location: Muskoka, ON /
Sytems: Heating • Cooling • Ventilation • Building Automation

The Problem

Heating alone was eating 30% of the resort’s entire energy bill and driving nearly two-thirds of its carbon footprint — three propane boilers running flat out, with no clean energy source available on site. Chillers, cooling towers and ventilation were all quietly running below their potential too.

The Approach

Renteknik audited the resort end to end — every system, every season, every load — to find where the real losses were. That meant identifying a carbon-neutral alternative to propane heating, catching chillers running outside spec, tracing a fouled cooling tower losing heat-transfer efficiency, and finding ventilation running on a fixed schedule instead of actual occupancy.

The Results

A clear, prioritized path to roughly $550K a year in savings — with a payback most facilities managers would sign off on the same week.

Every system, one picture.

Once heating, cooling and ventilation were seen together, the opportunities stacked up fast.

  • Heating source identified as the single biggest lever — and the biggest carbon cut
  • Chiller recommissioning alone worth $14K+ a year
  • Cooling tower fix restored heat-transfer efficiency at a fraction of replacement cost
  • Ventilation tied to actual occupancy instead of a fixed schedule

A resort runs on more than one system — heating, cooling, water, air, all at once. The savings were never in one place. They were in how the systems worked together. Not a single fix. A full picture.”
